Helen specialises in defending life and disability insurance claims for both life insurers and superannuation trustees in relation to claims on individual and group risk products, including death, disability, and trauma claims.
She is experienced in provided clients with advice on liability arising from claims for total and permanent disablement, death, trauma and income protection benefits, including the construction of policies and trust deeds, the interpretation and application of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 and Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993, and underwriting and avoidance issues arising out of non-disclosure and misrepresentation. She frequently prepares submissions in relation to disputes referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal.
Helen has been a co-presenter of the annual review of life insurance law, and regularly provides client training sessions on recent case law and the practical applications of legislative changes. Helen is a regular speaker for the Victorian Claims Management Group of the Australian Life Underwriters and Claims Association (ALUCA).
Helen also has experience in litigation relating to general insurance claims, including handling insurance recoveries, property claims, motor vehicle claims, public liability, product liability, fire and flood claims.
Prior to joining TurksLegal, Helen worked within the personal injury and commercial litigation teams at a plaintiff law practice. She gained experience in the areas of road accidents (Transport Accident Commission), workers’ compensation (WorkCover), public liability and insurance claims, debt recovery and a broad range of commercial litigation matters, in addition to disability insurance claims.
