The Workers Compensation (Surgeon and Orthopaedic Surgeon Fees) Order 2022 came into effect on 1 July 2022.
The Order is aimed to correct high surgeon and orthopaedic surgeon fees in the NSW workers compensation scheme. Previously, surgical rates in the scheme were ‘significantly higher’ than standard industry rates.
In announcing the changes, SIRA noted: ‘This change is about ensuring that every healthcare dollar spent delivers value and quality care, as the evidence shows that higher fees in NSW do not result in better surgery quality or access… Through this measure SIRA is returning savings of between $26 million and $42 million - that would have otherwise been in the pockets of surgeons – back to the workers compensation scheme each year.’
Of particular note is the significantly reduced maximum fees for procedures such as fusion surgeries, which are now to be charged in accordance with AMA rates.
